The Annual Happy List: Reflecting On 2016

annual happy list

When I think about it, 2016 was fairly good to me & I can't really complain; I didn't have such a shitty year compared to others. I mean, sure, there was my skin cancer surgery & the subsequent aftermath to deal with + all the other horrible, awful stuff that went on in this crazy world of ours like too many iconic musicians & other celebs dying (especially in the last week), terrorism & political upheaval; but overall, I really see no reason to look at this year in a negative light....hence why this post is called The Annual Happy List!

My Biggest Beauty Discoveries of 2016

beauty, 2016
For me, 2016 was not only a year of discovering new products, but also a year of daring to venture outside of my comfort zone a little & stop being so afraid of using stuff that I had but was rarely using, like curling wands & eyeshadows for example.

Rather than featuring products that came onto the market this year & doing a standard end-of-year beauty round-up (which, let's be honest, would feature about 5000 nail polishes & nothing else), this post is all about the discoveries I made in the beauty realm in 2016. Let's see what made the cut:

Empties Time! (December)

December 2016 empties

We interrupt this end-of-year round-up week to bring you the last empties post of 2016! Can't believe we're 2 days away from NYE - is it just me or has this year gone far too fast?

I'm pretty happy with the amount of products used up this month, although I would've liked to have finished a couple more. They'll probably end up in the January 2017 post anyway.

My Favourite Fashion Finds of 2016

2016 fashion favourites

Hola mi amigas!

Today I'm sharing with you my favourite fashion finds of 2016. Clothes, accessories, shoes - you name it, it's in this list. You're going to see a bit of a duochromatic theme here - for someone who loves colour so damn much, I'm surprised that all of my fashion faves for the year are either black or some kind of blue!

Some of these items you will have seen flatlayed/collaged in my Shopping Cart posts (which will be back next year, don't worry) & others you will have seen in other posts throughout 2016, but today....*inhale*....I'm actually going to be modelling these items for you! *exhale* Yep, that's right, you're finally going to see what I look like for realsies. Be gentle with me! I'm really fucking nervous (not to mention terrified!) about exposing myself, but I figure it's about time it happened.

My Favourite Tunes of 2016

Favourite songs of 2016

For me, 2016 was a year where my opportunities to check out new music diminished somewhat. Having limited internet (and having to share that source with the 2 other people in the family home) since my previous service was cut off back in January meant that I haven't been able to listen to music/browse YouTube all that often as I've had to keep in mind the dwindling data balance. It's amazing how much data gets chewed up watching videos!

Regardless of that, I've still managed to rustle up a list of my favourite tunes of 2016. Just like last year, my favourite song of the year comes from an Australian....and that tune is the one I'm starting this post with (the rest of my faves are in random order):

Matt Corby - Sooth Lady Wine

This track from Matt's long overdue/long awaited debut album Telluric (aka my favourite album of 2016) was love at first listen. Sure, it sounds very much like he was smoking the herb a lot whilst creating it & the rest of the album, but there's something about this chilled out bit of psych that I just love. I mentioned back in April's Monthly Happy List that I was loving it at the time & that love affair continued right throughout the year, so naturally I'm declaring this my #1 song of 2016. The amount of times I've had this on repeat since April....I've lost count.

A Christmas NOTD

Christmas, NOTD, nail polish, Zoya, Essie

Hola mi amigas!

I'm sure this hasn't escaped you; but in case you've been living under a rock, we're 2 days away from Christmas! Hope you all have got your fridges & pantries stocked full of delicious food & drink + presents under the tree for your loved ones....or money at the ready in case you're like my family & don't really do presents. (We're not Scrooges, we just figure we'd rather give money & then that way we can buy what we want iinstead of ending up with something we neither like nor will use.)

TNL Takes a Trip: Honolulu/Waikiki/Oahu

travel, TNL Takes a Trip

Disclaimer: Just like New York, I've been to Honolulu/Waikiki/Oahu 3 times now and have also seen & done everything that there is to see. Again, this post won't be for you if you've never been there & want to know everything; but if you want some tips about shopping, what to do & other random tidbits, then continue reading. As with my New York post, I'll provide some extra tips from previous visits here as well.

TNL Takes a Trip: San Francisco

san francisco, travel

Oh San Francisco, you made me want to become a West Coast gal, despite a less than impressive re-introduction.

A later-than-expected arrival (no thanks to windy weather & a detour via Sacramento for 2 hours) + my grumbling stomach meant that my feelings towards this city were on the back foot from the very beginning. Having been there some 20 years prior, my memories of SF were scant & despite seeing proper greenery (in the form of mountains) for the first time in weeks, I admit that I had my doubts about whether I’d made the right choice in going there (as well as where I stayed) as my cab approached my hotel near Fisherman’s Wharf. However, I am happy – nay, delighted – to report that on both fronts the Bay Area delivered.

TNL Takes a Trip: Neeeeeew Yoooooooooork

new york, travel

Disclaimer: I went to London in between Berlin & New York but didn't get a chance to do touristy stuff whilst there, so I won't be publishing a post about it. Between meeting up with friends both in & out of London, my 32nd birthday, my cousin's wedding + pre & post-wedding shindigs, I barely had enough time during my 8-night stay to sit still!

I'll also add that this was my 3rd visit to New York, my 2nd in 2 years. (I know, how lucky am I?) Since I've done most of the touristy things there already, this post isn't for you if you're looking for any real tips about all the sights. However, if you're looking for places to shop, where to eat & how to get around, then this is the post for you. I will also let you in on a couple of touristy things I did whilst in NYC & add some extra tips that I remember from my previous visit...which means this post is gonna look different compared with my previous TNL Takes a Trip posts.

10 Things I Love and Hate About Summer

Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, circa 2009
As a fan of warmer climes, it's only natural that summer is one of my favourite seasons (spring being the other favourite). If I had the dough, I'd chase an eternal summer & escape north once the weather turns chilly in Sydney. However, in the interests of balance & keeping bias to an even level, there are some things that I hate about it too & that's what today's post is all about.

My Polish Picks For Summer

In case you missed it, summer has arrived in Australia & I for one am excited. Bring on the warm & sultry days, pretty dresses & of course, more opportunities to get my mani/pedi game on.

This week on TNL, I'm going with a summer theme of sorts to celebrate the current season & today I'm going to share with you all what I reckon are great polish shades for summer.

Empties Time! (November)

empty beauty products

Another month down and time yet again to take out the beauty trash!

Compared with previous months, my tally for November wasn't too high; but there are some items in here that I'm soooooooooo glad I've finished as they were bugging me.

Tuesday, 29 November 2016

I know it's Tuesday & I normally don't post on Tuesdays, but today is a special occasion & I just have to get this out.

Today this little blog of mine celebrates its first birthday!

I know, time flies right? I can't quite believe I've made it to the 1 year mark myself.

My Perfume Collection & Wishlist (Update)

Those of you who have been with me since the start might recall I did a post back in about February featuring all the perfumes I own, plus all the ones I wanted. It was one of my most popular posts & one I really enjoyed putting together. Since then my stash has grown & my wishlist has changed, so I figured why not put that post into draft & give it an overhaul, with new photos & the like (although some of the wording will remain the same).

Like I said the first time around, I don't wear perfume as often as I should. Mostly because I forget to apply the stuff before heading out, but I'm also aware that people are allergic and/or sensitive to it, so I guess that's partly why I don't wear it that much. Nevertheless, I do enjoy collecting perfume and I can't resist going past the fragrance sections of Myer or David Jones without browsing & having a sniff of something a bit special. I reckon a spritz of perfume rounds things off rather nicely.

No, it's a dupe-tastic nail polish!

Super Duper Mega Empties Time! (August/September/October)

empty beauty products

Missed an empties post? Catch up via the Empties tag.

Hola mi amigas! Feels like it's been a hot minute since I did one of these posts....although I suppose it has been a while, since the last one was back in June/July!

This empties post is a little varied in terms of what products I've finished. Regulars will know that I tend to finish skincare quicker than other beauty products; but this time around I've managed to finish up a tiny amount of haircare & makeup items as well, so yay, go me! There's also a bunch of empties from my travels (because I wasn't going to stop photographing my beauty trash whilst away), so my photos will be varied in terms of backgrounds & lighting.

The Trip Haul (Part 2): Skincare & Bodycare

Hola mi amigas & happy Halloween! It's time for the 2nd installment of "what Shell bought during her travels & lugged all the way home to Sydney". If you missed part 1 with all my new makeup, hair & fragrance goodies, you can reeeeeead all aboooout it here.

TNL Takes a Trip: Singapore

singapore, travel, tnl takes a trip
The iconic Raffles Hotel in Singapore...and no, I didn't stay there.
A multi-cultural city & country rolled into one. A food lover’s paradise.  A shopaholic’s paradise too, come to think of it. A place where I feel safe, no matter what time of the day or night it is. A country with an awesome airline that always makes me feel special, despite slumming it in economy. All of these things represent Singapore to me.

NOTD: Pink Ribbon Day

notd, pink nail polish

Hola mi amigas! How was your weekend?

Today's post will be a pretty quick, yet kinda poignant one.

As I'm sure you all know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with the whole month coinciding with Pink Ribbon Day, which is normally held on the last (or, in this case, 2nd last) Monday of the month. I'm also sure that there's not one woman out there who hasn't been touched by breast cancer in some way, shape or form, whether it be personally, through a family member or through a friend. Even if you haven't been affected, there are plenty of high-profile women out there like Jane McGrath, Shannen Doherty or (just recently, sadly) Rebecca Wilson who have either fought & lost their battle with the disease or who are still waging war against it.

So with this day firmly in mind, I decided to do a very simple skittle manicure in support of & as a tribute to the women out there who have battled this disease & won, as well as those who have fought & lost.

The Trip Haul (Part 1): Makeup, Hair & Fragrance

Hola mi amigas I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaack!

I don't know about you, but whenever I return from a holiday it takes me a while to get back into the swing of things. Whilst I can't say this time around was any different, I did however decide to ease any internal pressure by delaying all blog work (except photography) for an extra week. Putting myself under pressure to deliver just raises my stress levels & a stressed-out Shell is no bueno for anyone or anything, let alone this blog.

But enough about that, let's get to the good stuff...betcha dying to know what I hauled right? And when I say hauled, I mean hauled! I was very good with myself up until I got to the US & from there on in it was hell for leather as far as my spendage was concerned. A 32-odd kg suitcase & Virgin America collecting $75US from me for my flight from San Francisco to Honolulu later....luckily for me, I cruised back home to Sydney so there were no further excess baggage charges to pay, hooray! I consider myself pretty lucky to have paid it just the once.

Project Polish Winter 2016 - The End (of the Entire Project!)

Missed out on all the Project Polish action on TNL? Read up on about it here. Just want to know about the Winter edition? Find out what polishes I included here and how much progress I made at the halfway mark here.

Ok peeps, let me be real here for a mo. The final few weeks of this Project Polish has been tough. Real tough. I've barely made time to paint my nails, nor have I had a real inclination to do so. I kept telling myself that I'd sit down & do it on a certain day, but then that day came & I was either busy doing other things or, quite frankly, too exhausted to put fingernail to polish.

For some reason throughout each edition of Project Polish, I've done quite well up until halfway & then afterwards its all gone to pot. Maybe there's something in that??

Scrub-A-Dub-Dub With Sukin

sukin, body scrubs

Updated 21/10/16
I know I've mentioned in the past that I make my own body scrub; but as my recent Priceline haul will attest, I stopped being frugal for a sec & bought a few pre-made scrubs to try out. Today I'm going to give my first impressions of the 2 Sukin body scrubs I purchased - the Renewing Body Scrub with Green Tea & Coconut, plus the Energising Body Scrub with Coffee & Coconut.

Never heard of Sukin before? They're an Australian natural skin & hair care company that have fast become a favourite amongst beauty lovers nationwide, as well as worldwide. (I think I may have seen a UK blogger raving about them recently, but don't quote me on that.) Their focus is on providing affordable & high quality skin & hair care without chemical nasties like sulphates, parabens or harsh detergents. In fact, the list of what they don't include in their products is almost a mile long! (Anyone who has ever bought one of their products would've noticed that list on their packaging.) They're also a cruelty-free company, which is another bonus.

How This Former Over-packer Changed Her Ways

I don't know about you, but packing for a holiday can be a nightmare. If you're anything like my former self, you end up chucking in all these clothes & costume jewellery, only to discover that (a) you don't end up wearing them & (b) the things you end up needing like long sleeve tops, scarves & a decent jacket you don't pack. (Hello eastern Canada in early autumn!) Cue a mad scramble to the shops to find something you like...or don't like, in the case of my very touristy Niagara Falls hoodie. (Hey, I had to keep warm!)

If you're also anything like former me, you could find yourself potentially losing your luggage at the hands of officious VIA Rail staff in Toronto because it's overweight* & well, they're sticklers for weight restrictions. Cue lots of swearing, stress & the realisation that something had to give the next time you travel overseas.....

...enter the capsule wardrobe.

TNL On Hiatus

Hiya ladies & gents! Hope you're enjoying your weekend so far.

I just want to let you know that as of 11am today, I'm heading off overseas & won't be back until mid-October. I do have a number of posts scheduled in my absence (like the final post of my year-long Project Polish series, which I've scheduled for the 29th of this month), so stay tuned; but other than that all will be quiet on the blogging front. I like to digitally detox when I'm on holidays, so I hope you can understand why I'm taking a break for now. Rest assured, once I'm back, there will be an onslaught of trip-related posts, as well as a haul post or 2 (or more).

Cya on the flipside peeps!

Ridin' Solo

As I've mentioned about a million times, I'm about to embark on my first ever solo trip overseas. Whilst I'm feeling excited about my adventure & all that it will entail (the chance to explore new cities as well as re-visiting others; catching up with friends & family who live overseas + the promise of several hauls of the beauty & fashion kind - bring it on!), I've also felt a sense of trepidation and slight anxiety in the lead-up...and you can thank my double X chromosomes for that.

The Monthly Happy List (July)

monthly happy list

Now that we've ticked over into August, it's time to give you guys an insight into what has happened in my world in the last month, what I've enjoyed & what I've been listening to. If you've missed any previous Monthly Happy Lists of mine, then check them out here. I would've had this post up earlier if it weren't for all the Priceline sale madness, but better late than never though right?

Priceline 40% Off Skincare Sale Haulage

skincare, sales, hauls

So another Priceline 40% off sale has come & gone & yet again I have a haul to show you. At least this time the process was seamless - none of that running around like a headless chicken trying to find stuff!

Tuesday, 2 August 2016

It's Priceline's 40% Off Skincare Sale Again!

My favourite sale of the year is happening all over again! (Priceline's 40% off skincare sale that is.)

This Aussie drugstore chain holds bi-annual sales each year across different departments and whilst I don't care for the 2-day makeup or haircare sales, I live for the skincare one (which starts today & runs through to the end of Thursday) and as mentioned in my haul post from the January sale, I will spend weeks if not months cultivating a wishlist. That's just the kind of nerd I am haha.

Monday, 1 August 2016

The Shopping Cart (July)

It's that time of the month not that one....the time of the month where I round up all my purchases for your voyeuristic pleasure & tell you about each of them. As always, any sales or links mentioned in this post are correct at the time of publishing. If by chance those links are broken or sales are no longer happening by the time you read this post, then I can't nor won't be held responsible.

Whilst this Shopping Cart post is nowhere near as gigantic as the last one, it's still pretty substantial; so grab a cuppa & settle in.

Review: O&M Know Knott Detangler (Mini)

Do you and your brush or comb go to war each time you put either of them through your hair?

Do you have hair that is prone to looking like a birds nest knots?

Do you like your hair products to not only smell great but work effectively?

If you answered yes to all or any of the above, then I'd like you to meet a hair product you should introduce into your arsenal:

A Month of NOTD's

Hiya everyone!

I thought I'd put together a post featuring all the NOTD's (that's Nails of the Day for the uninitiated) I've done over the last month and a bit for you. All of the polishes I've been using are in my Winter Project Polish so no, I haven't been sneaky & used something else!

The Lust List #2

the lust list #2

Hi everyone!

It's time for another edition of The Lust List, where I gather together a whole stack of items I'm currently itching to add to cart. The first post seemed pretty popular & I enjoyed putting it together, so it was a no brainer to do another one!

The Monthly Happy List (June)

monthly happy list

Happy post-Hump Month people! I can't say I've ever heard June being referred to as "hump month" before (thanks Ebay Australia and your hilarious Barry White-esque ad!), but when you think about it, June is the middle of the year and therefore should be known as "hump month", just like we refer to Wednesday as "hump day" right? Or is this just an Australian thing? Do tell.

A Solution To Your Regrowth Woes

loréal, hair

Updated 9/11/16

How's this for a first people: a product my Mum told me about and asked me to buy, all before I even knew about it....and she's not the beauty lover out of us 2!

So what is this product? It's Loréal Paris' Magic Retouch Instant Root Concealer Spray (phew, that's a mouthful!) and today I'm going to be reviewing the Dark Brown shade for you all, which is perfect for my hair colour. It also comes in Blonde, Light Brown, Brown & Black - sorry to all the red-headed beauties out there, you guys lose out. (Unless you live in the US, in which case they do sell a red version of this.) Although my Mum (whose hair I'm not featuring in this post) is currently flame in hue, she figured she'd use this shade because anything is better than walking around with grey roots, right?

10 Things I Love and Hate About Winter

I don't know about you, but I'm not a fan of winter. Even though it doesn't snow in Sydney & the lowest temperature we get down to during the daytime could be anywhere between, say, 12-19°C, I still don't like it. As for those people who say they love winter...seriously *smh* right now.

Battle of the Curling Wands: The Wrap Up

curling wands, hair

Missed the entire series? Here's Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.

Good morning folks! How was your weekend? Mine was spent mostly indoors trying to keep dry as Sydney copped another east coast low again. Thankfully it was nowhere near as bad as the one we had 2 weeks ago...phew!

As promised on Friday, I'm dedicating a separate post to wrapping up my Battle of the Curling Wands series as I felt it deserved that, rather than being shoved into the end of a rather long 3rd & final installment.

Battle of the Curling Wands (Part 3): GHD Curve Soft Curl Tong (32mm)

hair, curling wands, GHD

Missed Parts 1 and 2? You can catch up on them here and here.

Hi everyone & welcome to the final instalment of my 3 part series featuring the curling wands I own. As promised, this post features links to the other 2 parts and all posts in this series will or have been updated with links to the other parts, so that you can follow along easily.

As previously mentioned, for each of these posts, I'll be prepping my (freshly-washed, partly air-dried) hair using TRESemmé's Perfectly (Un)Done Wave Creating Foam before blow-drying & curling and will attempt to use the same curling method (either over or under & towards my face) throughout. I've also decided that in order to save time & perhaps prevent any personal confusion with my curling method, I'm going to use a hair styling hack I recently re-discovered - I'll scoop all my hair into a high ponytail & tie it with an elastic before curling. I've done this in the past & it works quite well.

No Post Today

via Good Housekeeping
Hiya everyone,

I know it's Monday & time for a normal post, but since it's the Queen's Birthday long weekend I'm giving myself the day off. This will become a regular occurrence from now on in regards to public holidays, but nevertheless it's worth giving a heads up. I'll be back on Friday with a new post, as normal.

To all my Australian readers who have today off, hope you're having a wonderful long weekend!

Missed Part 1? Catch up on it here.

Hi everyone and welcome to the 2nd of my 3-part series featuring the 3 curling wands I own. As promised, this post contains the link to part 1 and all posts in this series will or have been updated with links to the other parts once they have been published, so you can follow along easily.

For each of these posts, I'll be prepping my (freshly-washed) hair using TRESemmé's Perfectly (Un)Done Wave Creating Foam before blow-drying & curling. I (will also attempt to) use the same curling method (either over or under & towards my face) throughout. Project Polish Winter 2016 Edition

project polish, nail polish

You can catch up on previous editions via the Project Polish tag.

This post could also be named "My polish picks for winter", because (at risk of tooting my own horn) I think I've chosen shades that are perfect for the time of year Australia has just entered into. Whilst none of them are that special, I feel as though the last edition of my year-long Project Polish series is probably the most cohesive of them all.

The Monthly Happy List (May)

So the 5th month of the year has come & gone & yet again, I'm wondering where the hell this year is going. At least now Sydney's weather is beginning to behave like late autumn/early winter. Last Saturday we reached a top of 15°C, which for Sydney is definitely winter-y. The sudden cold snap was a bit of a shock I admit!

Anyway, let's see what made me happy during Mayo:

NOTD: Can't Find My Party Shoes

How was your weekend? Mine wasn't too bad - got busy in the kitchen whipping up food left right & centre because I was in that sort of mood. I don't know about you, but when the weather begins to turn cooler, I get the urge to get into the kitchen & cook & bake to my heart's content. Of course, I had just enough time to do my nails and create today's post.

Battle of the Curling Wands (Part 1): Jilbère de Paris Euro 2500 25mm Ceramic Curler

hair, curling wands, Jilbere de Paris
Hi everyone!

Today's post is the first of a 3-part series I'll be featuring on TNL, all about the curling wands I own. (Although one of them's actually a waving wand, but let's not get into semantics!)

You may remember at the beginning of the year I mentioned that one of my intentions for 2016 was to do more with my hair than just the usual ponytail or top knot; so it's in that spirit that I decided I'd get out of my oft-neglected curling wands, have a play around with them for practising purposes & review them for the blog. I'll update this post and all the others with links to the other parts once they have been published, so you can follow along easily.

3 Sunscreens I've Been Trialling Lately

As you all know by now (and if you don't, then catch up on the story here), sunscreen is something that has become terribly important to me of late. Having had 2 skin cancers removed from my face in the last 4 months, I don't wish to discover any more and if there's anything I can do to prevent further damage down the track, then a tube of SPF is something I want on hand at all times.

I've been using chemical sunscreens for a while now, but in my seemingly never-ending quest to find the perfect sunscreen, I've recently switched to using physical-based sunscreens, purely because I felt like a change & I wanted to see how far advanced formulations are from the thick, white days of old.

My Favourite Eurovision Tunes of the Last 6 Years

Hi everyone I'm back from my holiday! I won't lie, reality bites right now (especially since I had an absolute blast whilst away); but as the old saying goes, "all good things must come to an end". Would also like to say sorry for the lack of a post 2 Fridays ago - I must've edited it when it was in schedule mode & forgot to hit the schedule button again. It's up on the blog now if you want to read it.

But enough about that, let's get into today's post...

The Shopping Cart (April)

It's that time of the month not that one....the time of the month where I round up all my purchases for your voyeuristic pleasure & tell you about each of them. I'm not grouping my purchases into categories this month because I simply can't be bothered and in the end, I had to photograph the majority of my purchases myself. Cue 10000 shots I wasn't happy with & 2 that were ok enough to be seen.

As always, any sales or links mentioned in this post are correct at the time of publishing. If by chance those links are broken or the sales are no longer happening by the time you read this post, then I can't nor won't be held responsible.
